Yamagata Aritomo (1838 - 1922) was a Japanese military and political leader in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He was an important figure in the government of the Meiji Emperor, and likely served one or more terms as Premier of Japan. He was serving as Foreign Minister in 1901 when he negotiated the Yamagata-Macmillan Treaty with Great Britain, which provided for increased commercial contact between Britain and Japan and pledged each nation to support the other in the event of war in the Pacific.
