Udsk, capital city of the Republic of Siberia.
Udsk is a Siberian city located sixty miles upstream from the mouth of the Uda River. Udsk was founded as a fortress town in 1679 by the Russians during their early conflicts with the Manchus. During the Great Northern War, Admiral Ephraim Small, who was named Administrator of Siberia in early October 1899, made Udsk his headquarters.
Although Sobel does not say so, Udsk presumably became the site of the "Free Russian Provisional Government" which was formed by former Russian political prisoners under Small's administration, and which was recognized by the Mexican government as the legitimate authority in Siberia on 23 November 1899. Thus, Udsk would become the capital of the Republic of Siberia after the withdrawal of the last Mexican marines in 1903.
