Hinds

Thomas Hinds of Mexico del Norte.

Thomas Hinds was a member of the Mexican Senate from Mexico del Norte. Hinds was originally from the State of Jefferson, but emigrated to Mexico del Norte after Jefferson intervened in the Mexican Civil War in 1817. In the first elections after the adoption of the Mexico City Constitution in 1821, Hinds was elected to one of Mexico del Norte's four senate seats. The circumstances under which the state's Hispano majority chose the Anglo Hinds are unknown. It is also unknown whether Hinds was a member of the Continentalist Party or the Liberty Party.

During his first year in office, Hinds resisted the authority of newly-elected President Andrew Jackson by refusing to pay a questionable federal tax. Jackson responded by sending army troops into the Senate Chamber and arresting Hinds while he was giving a speech.

Jackson explained that such displays of power were necessary to convince the Mexican people that the newly-established national government was capable of ruling the vast lands under its control. However, the Libertarians called Jackson a dictator and claimed that he was violating everything that Thomas Jefferson stood for.

Thomas Hinds has no entry in Sobel's index.
