Simon Cardenes was the leading author in the United States of Mexico in the late 19th century, and was also a particular favorite in the Confederation of North America. Cardenes' popularity among North Americans led Chief of State Benito Hermión to appoint him as the Mexican ambassador to the C.N.A. in 1881. Cardenes proved to be adept at negotiating with Minister for Foreign Affairs Malcolm Kitteridge, resulting in several important agreements between the two nations, most notably the 1884 Kitteridge-Cardenes Treaty.
