Reynosa is a city in the Mexican state of Durango on the south bank of the Rio Grande, sixty-five miles upstream from the Gulf of Mexico. In 1880, oil prospectors from Petroleum of Mexico began to discover numerous petroleum deposits between Reynosa and the port of Tampico. Many Mexicano peasants living near the Gulf Coast of Durango became instant millionaires from the sale of oil drilling rights on their land.
Reynosa does not have an entry in Sobel's index. The city is mentioned on page 175 of For Want of a Nail ....
Sobel's source for the discovery of oil near Reynosa is Charles Winslow's Peasants in Brocade: The Oil Millionaires of Chiapas and Durango (New York, 1962).
