Andrew Carnegie

Andrew Carnegie.

The North American United was a railroad line created by Andrew Carnegie after the Rocky Mountain War. The creation of the North American United was fueled by Carnegie's rivalry with his former employer Thomas Scott, creator of the Grand National Railroad. By 1880, the North American United line owned 22,000 miles of track. Carnegie's rivalry with Scott extended to the introduction of innovations in the railroad business. The North American United was the first railroad to introduce sleeping and eating cars, carriage feeders, and air brakes. By the turn of the twentieth century, the North American railroad business was dominated by the North American United, the Grand National, and Patrick Gallivan's Indiana Northern Railroad, which together controlled almost 90% of the C.N.A.'s rail traffic.
