The island of Newfoundland
Newfoundland is a large island in the North Atlantic Ocean, just northeast of Nova Scotia. After early exploration by Vikings (and possibly Irish or Welsh sailors), it was claimed by England in 1583 and settled by small populations of both French and English fishermen. British control of the island was confirmed by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Permanent settlement by fishermen increased through the eighteenth century, peaking in the early nineteenth. The island was the site of one battle in the French and Indian War.
Sobel never mentions Newfoundland, which was presumably either organized separately from the Confederation of North America or forms part of the associated confederation of Quebec or the associated province of Nova Scotia.
In For All Nails Newfoundand, as IOW through 1949, is governed as an independent British colony. There Nova Scotia includes what IOW is PEI, New Brunswick, and part of Maine, while in the frontspiece map in Sobel, Nova Scotia is smaller than IOW.
