National Electric is a company established by North American inventor Thomas Edison in the 1870s to produce and market the incandescent light bulb he invented. The company electrified the North American capital of Burgoyne in 1880, but filed for bankruptcy in May of that year due to the Great Depression. Although Sobel does not specifically say so, it is likely that National Electric received a loan from the National Financial Administration that allowed it to pay off its creditors and emerge from bankruptcy.
