Morelos was a silver-mining camp established by Mexican miners during the 1844 silver rush in the Broken Arrow region of Vandalia and Mexico del Norte. The camp was named after José María Morelos, a leader of the pre-U.S.M. republic of Mexico. In the summer of 1845, at the height of hostilities between Mexican and North American miners, a group of North American vigilantes destroyed the camp.
During the 1845 election campaigns, Continentalist Party presidential nominee Pedro Hermión made frequent references to the "martyrs of Morelos" in his campaign speeches in order to heighten voters' fears of imminent conflict with the C.N.A.
Sobel erroneously refers to the camp as Morales.
