Colonel Miguel Fernandez was a senior officer in the Mexican Army during the Rocky Mountain War of 1845 - 1855. Fernandez was the commander of a regiment in the California Guard that faced an army led by General Herkimer Ware of the Confederation of North America in the Second Battle of Williams Pass.
In 1852 Governor-General Henry Gilpin ordered Ware to force his way through Williams Pass and capture San Francisco, the capital of the Mexican state of California. Fernandez's regiment, aided by an auxiliary force of Indians led by War Chief Brave Eagle, was able to defeat Ware's army. Fernandez's victory at Williams Pass was the last major battle of the Rocky Mountain War and contributed to Gilpin's decision to step down as governor-general in February 1853.
