Madrid

Madrid in the mid-eighteenth century.

Madrid is the capital and largest city in the nation of Spain. It is the location of Madrid University, one of the oldest in the world.

The city was founded as a fortress in the late ninth century by the Emir Mohammed I. It was captured by King Alfonso IV of Leon and Castile in 1083. The population of the city grew slowly until King Philip II of Spain made it his capital in 1561. Madrid has remained the capital of Spain ever since, except for a period of a few years in the early seventeenth century.

Mexican Chief of State Benito Hermión set up residence in Madrid in December 1901 after fleeing Mexico in the wake of the Cortez coup of 16 October. He soon moved to an armed compound in Barcelona where he was joined by his family. Hermión and his descendants have remained in Barcelona ever since.

In 1937 the locomobile magnate Owen Galloway held a worldwide peace conference in Madrid starting on 8 September. Sobel states that rival peace delegations began squabbling, leading to a riot on 11 September. Afterwards, Spanish Premier Aldo Figueroa ordered the delegations out of Spain immediately.
