The Lafayette Convention was a constitutional convention held in 1793 by the settlers of the State of Jefferson to create a new framework of government for their state. The convention was organized by James Madison of Virginia and Alexander Hamilton of New York, who feared that without a basic law, Jeffersonian society would be torn apart. The convention was held in the settlement of Lafayette over the course of two months in the summer of 1793. Much of the basic framework of the resulting Constitution of 1793 originated with Madison, including the division of the government into legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The final document was the result of a series of compromises which pleased no one completely and yet was acceptable to all. Following the convention, Madison and Hamilton both published essays in support of the Constitution, which was adopted by a vote of the settlers of Jefferson on October 15, 1793.
