Lafayette

Lafayette is a city in the Mexican state of Jefferson. It was founded by members of the Wilderness Walk, and named after the Marquis de Lafayette.

Lafayette is best known as the site of the Lafayette Convention, where Jefferson's first written constitution, the Constitution of 1793, was drafted.

By the 1840s, Hispanos were a growing minority in the city, and the Continentalist Party placated them by running a Hispano politician named Pedro Hermión for the city's Assembly seat. At the Continentalists' May 1843 state convention in Henrytown, Hermión was able to persuade Peter O'Gorman to allow him to address the convention by saying he wished to speak "on the problems of my people in Lafayette." Hermión then went on to give his famous Scorpions in a Bottle speech, which instantly made him the leader of the Continentalists.
