José Torres.
José Torres was one of two young men who sought to take advantage of the growing idolization of Pedro Hermión, the late former President of the United States of Mexico, by coming forward in 1859 claiming to be Hermión's illegitimate son. Sobel does not say what became of Torres, and Torres does not have an entry in Sobel's index. He is mentioned in a footnote on p. 134 of For Want of a Nail ....
Sobel's source for Torres's appearance and claim is Margaret McQuire's The Hermión-Craze: Mass Delusion in Mexico (London, 1910).
