John Shelby

John Shelby of California.

John Shelby was a member of the Continentalist Party from the State of California who was elected to the  Mexican Senate in the 1833 Mexican elections. As a member of the Senate's Continentalist caucus, he voted for Andrew Jackson for President. However, years later, he admitted that "Huddleston was defeated by a phantom, not a man. We cast our ballots in '33 for the ghost of '17, not the man who stood before us."

Sobel's source for John Shelby's remark was William McMullen's A Half Century of Life and Labor (Mexico City, 1869).
