Jefferson Brigade

Jefferson Brigade.

The Jefferson Brigade was a paramilitary organization based in the state of Jefferson created in the 1870s by Monte Benedict, the founder and chief executive of the Petroleum of Mexico corporation. Benedict created the Jefferson Brigade in response to the rise of the Moralistas, a Mexicano revolutionary movement founded by Senator Carlos Concepción of Chiapas.

In the wake of the Massacre of the Innocents in Palenque in July 1881, a general Mexicano uprising occurred in the United States of Mexico. Benedict was able to prevent the uprising from spreading to Jefferson by using the Brigade to repress the Mexicano minority there. Although Sobel does not say so, it is likely that the Jefferson Brigade was combined with the Kramer Guard in 1892 when Petroleum of Mexico merged with the California-based Kramer Associates.
