Iwo Jima

Iwo Jima and Japan.

Iwo Jima is a volcanic island 750 miles south of Tokyo, Japan, part of the Bonin Islands. The islands were first discovered by the Spanish explorer Bernardo de la Torre in 1543, then by Japanese explorers in 1670. Iwo Jima and the other Bonin Islands were uninhabited at the time of the North American Rebellion of the 1770s.

Iwo Jima was a Japanese possession in 1942 when the island was captured by the Mexican Navy after the U.S.M. entered the Global War. The Japanese reconquered the island during their counteroffensive in the latter half of 1944.

IOW, the Bonin Islands were claimed by Great Britain in 1827 and first settled by Europeans, Americans, and Hawaiians in 1830. In 1862 the islands were claimed and settled by Japan. Iwo Jima was captured by the U.S.A. in 1944 during World War II, and returned to Japan in 1968.
