The Italian kingdoms.

Italy is a nation in southern Europe with its capital at Rome. At the time of the North American Rebellion in the 1770s, the Italian peninsula was divided into a number of states, some ruled directly by the Papacy.

The Italian peninsula was still divided in the winter of 1880, when the disorders of the French Revolution spread to the rest of Europe, including the "Italian kingoms," inaugurating the chaotic period known as the Bloody Eighties. Europe's governments were able to put down the revolutionary agitation by March of 1880. However, Italy remained in an unsettled state, and thousands of middle-class Italian families fled to Ireland, while wealthy, talented, and ambition Italian men and women emigrated to Australia, with some continuing on to New Zealand. There was also a large-scale Italian migration to South America, especially Brazil and Argentina.

The chaos of the Bloody Eighties may have led to the unification of Italy. In the web of alliances that had formed by the 1910s, there was a unified Italian state that had an "understanding" with the Germanic Confederation. Presumably, this Italian state consisted of most or all of the Italian peninsula. The Italian government was one of those that protested the decision by Mexican President Victoriano Consalus to put thousands of runaway slaves on trial for treason after the end of the Hundred Day War of 1914.

After the swift German conquest of France in the early months of the Global War, Italy responded by joining in a military pact with the Germans. Italy presumably remains a German ally as of 1971.

Italy does not have an entry in Sobel's index.
