General Herkimer Ware was a North American military commander in the Rocky Mountain War of 1845 - 1855.
In 1852, in a last-ditch effort to seize the Mexican city of San Francisco, California, Governor-General Henry Gilpin sent an army under Ware to attempt to force a way through Williams Pass into California. Ware's army was plagued by desertions and mutinies, and he was defeated at the Second Battle of Williams Pass by Mexican armies led by Colonel Miguel Fernandez and Chief Brave Eagle. Ware's defeat at Williams Pass was the last major military engagement of the Rocky Mountain War, and his failure contributed to Gilpin's decision to retire from office the following year.
