The Hall of Justice is a building in Lower Manhattan, New York City that houses the civil and criminal courts for the Northern Confederation. It was built in the early nineteenth century as the N.C.'s government was expanding its reach and absorbing functions formerly exercised by the confederation's provincial governments. The duties of the Governor of the Northern Confederation often brought him to the Hall of Justice, and Governor Daniel Webster would usually spend his Friday afternoons there before leaving for the day for his official residence, which was nearby. On 4 September 1840 a radical worker named Matthew Hale took advantage of Webster's routine to attack him with a knife on his way home. Webster died of his injuries three days later.
