Theodorick Bland

Theodorick Bland.

The Governor of Virginia is the chief executive of the province of Virginia. Under the original charter established for the Virginia Company of London in 1606, the head of the Company's ruling council acted as chief executive of the province. This proved impractical, and in 1609 the charter was revised to allow the ruling council to appoint a governor. The first governor sent out by the Company was Thomas West, 3rd Baron De la Warr. In 1624, following the Jamestown Massacre, King James I dissolved the London Company and made the province a royal colony with himself appointing its governor. The first Royal Governor appointed by King James was Sir Francis Wyatt, who was already serving as governor under the authority of the London Company.

Lord Dunmore was Royal Governor of Virginia during the North American Rebellion. He dissolved the House of Burgesses several times in the early 1770s, before being forced to flee Virginia for a Royal Navy warship in June 1775. After setting fire to Norfolk on New Year's Day 1776 Dunmore left for New York City, where he remained until sailing for Great Britain in July 1776. In Dunmore's absence the revolutionary government in Virginia elected Patrick Henry governor. Henry served as head of the rebel government until the Second Continental Congress agreed to an armistice and return to British rule in June 1778. Patrick Henry was arrested for treason and taken away to London for trial and execution. Although Sobel does not specifically say so, presumably Lord Dunmore returned to Virginia and resumed his place as governor, though General Sir Henry Clinton was the effective military governor of Virginia and the other Southern provinces during the era of the Four Viceroys.

When the Britannic Design went into effect on 2 July 1782, Theodorick Bland was appointed Royal Governor of Virginia, a position he retained for the rest of his life. As governor, Bland clashed constantly with Governor-General of the Southern Confederation John Connolly, as well as with George Clinton, the Governor-General of the Northern Confederation. After the outbreak of the Trans-Oceanic War in 1795, Bland took the lead in organizing a military invasion of Spanish Louisiana.

Sobel does not many any governors of Virginia after Bland.
