The Governor of Georgia is the chief executive of the Province of Georgia in the Southern Confederation. The office of Governor of Georgia dates back to 1754, when Georgia was transformed from a proprietary colony to a crown colony and Captain John Reynolds was appointed royal governor. During the North American Rebellion, a revolutionary congress was established that served as a rival government to that of Governor James Wright. Early in 1776 rebel forces entered his home and placed Wright under arrest until his escape to HMS Scarborough on 11 February. When an attempt to seize Savannah failed Wright left for Great Britain, where he worked to convince Lord Germain to send a force to take the city. Following rebel losses at Philadelphia and Albany in the fall of 1777 the Rebellion failed, and Wright was able to resume his post under General Sir Henry Clinton.

Under the Britannic Design of 1781 the governor of Georgia continued to be appointed by the Crown until 1808, when he was appointed by the province's legislature. The best-known governor of Georgia before the Second Britannic Design was adopted in 1842 was John Calhoun of the Liberal Party, who was best known for his Defense of the Realm speech of 1829 defending the institution of Negro slavery in the S.C.
