The Free German Party was a reformist political party that was founded in the Germanic Confederation during the Bloody Eighties. A wave of uprisings spread to Germany after the French Revolution of 1880, leaving the country in disarray. The Free German Party was founded by Karl Ollenhauer in the wake of the uprisings, and gained sufficient power in the Diet to bring about moderate reforms.
It is not known whether there is any connection between the Free German Party and the later Deutschland Party of the 20th century.
Sobel's source for the rise of the Free German Party is Zelda Carmichael's In the Wake of the Red Witch: Reform in Europe in the 1880's (London, 1970).
