Frank Butland

Adm. Frank Butland.

Frank Butland was a naval officer in the armed forces of the United States of Mexico. Butland was the admiral commanding the Mexican First Fleet in 1890 during the outbreak of the War for Salvation between Mexico and New Granada. Admiral Butland's forces captured the New Granadan port of La Guaira on 2 March, then went on to capture Caracas the next day. This paved the way for General Francisco Goodspeed's First Mexican Army to land and take control of the eastern areas of New Granada while the 34th Marine Brigade under Colonel David Brewster advanced on the New Granadan capital of Bogotá, which they captured on 8 June.

Sobel's sources for Frank Butland's role in the War for Salvation is John Earley's A History of the New Granada Expedition (New York, 1914); and Miguel Olin's El Jefe's War for Salvation (New York, 1956).
