The Spanish mission at Espiritu Santo.
The Spanish settlement of Nuestra Señora de la Bahía del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga, usually known as La Bahía or Espiritu Santo, is located on the San Antonio River, 100 miles downstream from San Antonio. The settlement grew up around a mission and presidio that were originally established on the coast of the Bahía del Espíritu Santo in 1722. The mission and presidio were moved to a new site on the Guadalupe River in 1726, then moved again to their current location in 1749.
Sobel mentions that Espiritu Santo and the other Spanish settlements in the Province of Tejas were large enough to ensure a modicum of safety and security to the former American rebels who established Jefferson City in 1782, but not strong enough to prevent its establishment. Later arrivals who preferred to travel by ship to Jefferson rather than follow the overland route used during the Wilderness Walk usually sailed to Espiritu Santo before making the short trip overland to the American settlement.
Sobel makes no further mention of Espiritu Santo after discussing its role in the early settlement of Jefferson.
IOW, the settlement at La Bahía formed the nucleus of the city of Goliad, Texas.
