Egbert Wilkes was a prominent lawyer and business associate of Bernard Kramer in the United States of Mexico. Wilkes was a senior partner in the law firm of Bigham & Wilkes, which served as general counsel for the Jefferson and California Railroad Company. In 1862 Wilkes took on Benito Hermión, the son of the late former President Pedro Hermión, as a law student. After he passed the bar Wilkes was able to get Hermión a position at the J & C Railroad, and by 1880 Hermión had risen to become president of the railroad. It was through Wilkes that Hermión became an associate of Kramer, which ultimately led to Hermión becoming Chief of State of the U.S.M. at Kramer's behest.
