Doheny

Major Michael Doheny.

The District Guard is a military unit in the United States of Mexico based in the Capital District. During the Rocky Mountain War, the commander of the District Guard, Major Michael Doheny, was ordered by President Pedro Hermión in July 1846 to hold the Tampico Road against an advancing North American army led by General Herbert Williamhouse. Doheny not only held off the North Americans, he was able to mount a counterattack that drove them back to Tampico. Hermión promoted Doheny to general and placed him in charge of the siege of Tampico, and Doheny was able to force Williamhouse to withdraw in March 1848.

During the Chapultepec Incident, the District Guard was sent from Mexico City to Chapultepec on 31 December 1915 to help the police there maintain order after anti-slavery protesters clashed with crowds celebrating the New Year. Most of the Guard returned to Mexico City on 3 January 1916, but a select unit of the Guard was stationed near the Federal Prison in case of further disturbances. Just before dawn the next day, fires broke out in the Chapultepec slums, and riots followed. The police were sent to quell the riots, and while they were gone, the Guard was overpowered by over two thousand young men, who went on to storm the prison and free over 8,000 imprisoned Negro slaves who had been put on trial for treason during the Hundred Day War. 188 members of the District Guard and prison guards were killed during the assault.
