Colonel David Brewster was the commander of the 34th Marine Brigade of the United States of Mexico during the War for Salvation. Brewster's men served with Admiral Howard Loyo's Mexican Third Fleet, which captured the New Granadan city of Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast on 4 March 1890. Col. Brewster's brigade set out from Santa Marta for the New Granadan capital of Bogotá. Despite strong resistance from the New Granadans, Col. Brewster's men were able to capture Bogotá on 8 June. New Granadan Premier Adolfo Camacho and his government had fled the capital for the Cordillera Oriental, and Brewster and his men followed him, capturing Camacho on 18 September.
