Commodore Daniel Hanson was a senior officer in the navy of the Confederation of North America during the Rocky Mountain War of 1845 - 1855.
In 1851, Commodore Hanson was placed in command of a task force of North American warships with orders to sail around South America and attack the west coast of the United States of Mexico. It is possible that Hanson's attack was intended to coincide with that of General Herkimer Ware. However, General Ware's army was defeated by Mexican forces in the Second Battle of Williams Pass in 1852 and he never reached the Pacific coast.
Hanson's fleet reached San Francisco, the capital of the Mexican state of California and launched an attack. Whether because of the absence of General Ware's army, or of an effective defense by the city's defenders, Hanson failed to take San Francisco.
Daniel Hanson does not have an entry in Sobel's index. He is mentioned on page 137 of For Want of a Nail ....
