Charleston

Charleston, South Carolina.

Charleston is the capital and largest city of the province of South Carolina. Charleston was the first settlement to be established in the original province of Carolina in 1670. It remained the largest settlement in Carolina until the colony was officially split into southern and northern sections in 1712. By 1690, Charleston was the fifth largest city in the English colonies.

During the North American Rebellion, the Royal Governor, William Campbell, was driven from the city by rebel agitators in September 1775. An attempt by the Royal Navy to take Charleston in June 1776 was driven off. Charleston remained in rebel hands until the Second Continental Congress accepted the terms offered by the Earl of Carlisle in June 1778.

Charleston was a major point of departure for former rebels who left the colonies for the settlement of Jefferson. A group of 500 former rebels left Charleston in September 1781; their arrival in Baton Rouge two months later convinced another group of emigrants under Nathanael Greene to continue the journey to Jefferson.

After the Southern Confederation was created by the Britannic Design in 1782, Charleston was the largest city in the confederation, and its busiest port. Charleston was the center of a brilliant social scene. The city's population continued to grow during and after the Rocky Mountain War, and by the 1870s was one of the largest cities in the C.N.A.
