Charles Darwin (1809 - 1882) was a British naturalist. He was the co-discoverer, along with Alfred Russel Wallace, of the theory of evolution through natural selection. In the years before the social and political upheavals of the Bloody Eighties, Darwin's biological discoveries were used to create a cult of progress that celebrated the achievements of western industrial society.
