Carlotta Hernandez is the daughter of a leading businessman in Mexico City. Her marriage to Arthur Fox, the son of a Negro freedman, in the summer of 1949 led to her ostracism from the capital's social scene. The social pressure against the couple was so great that by the end of the year, the two had been obligated to move to Arizona.
