General John Stark at the Battle of Bennington.
Bennington was the first of the New Hampshire Grants created by Governor Benning Wentworth in 1761. The grant allowed white settlers to purchase hundred-acre lots and establish a town government. Disputes over the ownership of lots were created when the government of New York province laid claim to the area west of the Connecticut River and attempted to levy taxes on the New Hampshire settlers and force them to re-purchase their grants.
During the Hudson campaign of 1777 General John Burgoyne sent a regiment of Hessian auxiliaries to Bennington to acquire horses and wagons and other supplies. The Hessians met a large force of New Hampshire militia under General John Stark and were defeated, most being either killed or captured. The defeat cost Burgoyne some 15% of his troop strength.
Despite its importance to the Hudson campaign, Sobel makes no mention of the Battle of Bennington in For Want of a Nail ....
