Alfred Russel Wallace (1823 - 1913) was a British explorer, naturalist, and biologist. He was the co-discoverer, along with Charles Darwin, of the theory of evolution through natural selection. In the years before the social and political upheavals of the Bloody Eighties, Wallace's biological discoveries were used to create a cult of progress that celebrated the achievements of western industrial society.
